It's a mess of a book and I struggle to get through it every time I try. Then out of no where the book takes a sharp turn and finishes in a fiery crash featuring an epic climax you weren't asking for at all. It's kind of interesting, but it completely halts the story you were originally interested in. Then, the story focuses in on one specific adventure that feels like a Star Trek/Stargate episode. The first section of the book is interesting and gives a great deal of context. It's easily the poorest written of the 3 books and sometimes feels like multiple authors melded different story ideas into one novel. It will help you understand Uru a lot better, though. It's my personal favorite book of the series but it doesn't provide nearly as much context for the Myst series. It's a fascinating fantasy book that really delves deep into a mythical civilization and completely holds your attention. The Book of Ti'ana: is a history lesson of the final years of the great civilization of D'ni. It really fills in the gaps between Myst and Riven by giving you context. The Book of Atrus: is well written and is almost a necessity in terms of back story.
